Regional Anesthesia Training

JPS Ultrasound Fellows receive extensive regional anesthesia/block training, practice, and teaching opportunities. It is a clear strength of our program.

Pillars of our multimodal Regional Anesthesia curriculum include in-house didactics, extensive human block anatomy scan practice, simulated performance on high-fidelity phantoms, and in-vivo patient block experiences both in our own Emergency Department, and in a longitudinal rotation in collaboration with the JPS Anesthesia Pain team. Longstanding shared ED and surgical specialty policies at JPS support the independent use of blocks by Emergency Physicians, so Fellows are empowered to use what they learn in their daily clinical practice. Example blocks Fellows learn include but are not limited to:

·      Adductor Canal (Saphenous)

·      Common Peroneal Nerve

·      Erector Spinae Plane

·      Infrainguinal Fascia Iliaca Plane

·      Femoral Nerve

·      Infraclavicular Brachial Plexus

·      Interscalene Brachial Plexus

·      iPACK

·      Median Nerve (@ forearm)

·      Pericapsular Nerve Group

·      Supraclavicular Brachial Plexus

·      Suprainguinal Fascia Iliaca Plane

·      Tibial Nerve (@ knee)

·      Transversus Abdominis Plane

·      Ulnar Nerve (@ forearm)

In addition to receiving in-depth education and practice experience under the direction of our own Fellowship Faculty and our collegial Anesthesia colleagues, Fellows themselves lead in education. Fellows take point on designing and coordinating our yearly collaborative DFW Regional-Squared Nerve Block Workshop, a large and successful event attended by three residency programs.

JPS Fellows additionally receive the unusual benefit of being trusted to travel (expenses covered) with the Section Chief and earn additional hourly pay for their time and expertise in teaching blocks to CRNAs, surgeons, and community emergency physicians across the US. This is an optional experience, but one that increases our Fellows teaching CV markedly relative to their peers, all while being compensated additionally.
